Lexington is a healthcare town. Three major hospital systems, a world-class academic medical center, and one of the highest concentrations of providers in the Commonwealth all compete for patients across Fayette County. That's great for care, but it creates a genuinely complicated Medicare decision. Which plans include your UK HealthCare specialists? Does your Medicare Advantage network cover Baptist Health Lexington and Saint Joseph? What happens if you need a referral to a facility outside your plan's network?
MedMyWay helps Lexington residents cut through the noise. Jeff and Suzanne Janosick are independent Medicare and health insurance agents who compare plans from every major carrier in Fayette County, at no cost to you. We're not employed by Humana, Anthem, or any single insurer. Our job is to match your doctors, prescriptions, and budget to the right plan, whether that's Medicare Advantage, a Medigap supplement, or a standalone Part D drug plan.
Lexington is Kentucky's second-largest city, with roughly 330,000 residents and a median age of 35.3. While the population skews younger than the state average thanks to the University of Kentucky, Fayette County still has a significant and growing Medicare population:
That 53.6% Medicare Advantage rate tells an important story. Lexington's market is almost evenly split between MA and Original Medicare with a supplement. In markets like this, neither path is a default: the right choice depends entirely on which providers you see, what medications you take, and how much predictability you want in your out-of-pocket costs.
What makes Lexington different from most Kentucky markets is the depth of its healthcare infrastructure. Three major systems operate here, and your Medicare plan choice determines how much you pay at each one.
UK HealthCare is the anchor. The University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital is the No. 1 ranked hospital in Kentucky (U.S. News & World Report) and the only Level I trauma center in Central and Eastern Kentucky. With over 1,290 staffed beds, 9,000 employees, and 80+ specialized clinics, UK HealthCare is where Lexington residents turn for complex care: cancer treatment at the Markey Cancer Center, transplant services, neurosurgery, and advanced cardiac procedures. UK Good Samaritan Hospital, also part of the system, provides additional inpatient and outpatient services across the city. If your doctors are in the UK system, your Medicare plan must include UK HealthCare in-network, or you'll face steep out-of-pocket costs for the care you're already receiving.
Baptist Health Lexington is a 434-bed acute care facility on Nicholasville Road and one of the most decorated hospitals in the region. It's the only Lexington hospital to earn an "A" safety grade from the Leapfrog Group and has been designated a Magnet hospital for nursing excellence five times. Baptist Health is known for its heart and cancer programs, and its maternity unit has delivered nearly 160,000 babies. The system also operates outpatient centers in Georgetown, Nicholasville, and Richmond, so if you see Baptist Health providers across Central Kentucky, network inclusion matters.
CHI Saint Joseph Health (now CommonSpirit Health) rounds out the trio. Saint Joseph Hospital, founded in 1877, was Lexington's first hospital and remains a 433-bed facility known for cardiology, orthopedics, and stroke care. Saint Joseph East provides additional services on the east side of town. Together, CommonSpirit operates nearly 100 locations across 15 Kentucky cities and 35 counties, so a plan that covers Saint Joseph in Lexington often extends to their facilities in Berea, London, Mount Sterling, and Jessamine County.
Beyond the big three, Lexington Clinic is the region's largest and oldest physician group, with 350+ providers across 30+ medical specialties and locations in Lexington, Georgetown, Frankfort, Nicholasville, Richmond, and Versailles. Many Lexington residents see a Lexington Clinic provider for primary care or specialists, so verifying network inclusion for your specific physician group is just as important as checking hospital coverage.
Bottom line: a plan that covers one system may not cover another. Before you enroll in any Medicare Advantage plan in Lexington, verify that your specific doctors, your hospital, and your preferred specialists are all in-network. That's exactly what we do at MedMyWay.
Fayette County has roughly 40 Medicare Advantage plans available for 2026 (excluding Special Needs Plans), with 64+ total options when you include D-SNPs and C-SNPs. That's a crowded field, and the differences between plans aren't always obvious from a marketing brochure.
Top carriers by enrollment in Fayette County:
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield — The most-enrolled HMO-POS plan locally, with an estimated 3,236 Fayette County members. Anthem's HMO-POS plans cover Bourbon, Clark, Fayette, and Madison counties and offer out-of-network flexibility. Star rating: 3.5.
Humana — The biggest carrier by total plan volume, offering everything from $0-premium PPOs to dual-eligible SNPs. Humana Gold Plus is the top HMO by enrollment (~2,900+ members locally). Multiple Humana plans carry 4.5-star ratings from CMS.
Aetna Medicare — Aetna Medicare Signature is the third most-enrolled plan in the county. Their PPO plans at 4.5 stars offer $0 premiums and $6,350 max out-of-pocket.
UnitedHealthcare (AARP) — Several HMO-POS options including Essentials, Extras, and Giveback plans, most at 4.0 stars with $0 premiums.
Wellcare — Growing presence locally through both Simple and Giveback HMO-POS plans at 3.5 stars.
Key stats across all plans:
29 of 40 non-SNP plans have $0 monthly premiums
Average monthly premium: approximately $10
Lowest max out-of-pocket: $3,350 | Highest: $9,250
Highest Part B giveback (premium reduction): $32/month
32 of 40 plans include Part D drug coverage
A few things to watch in the Lexington market specifically: Humana is headquartered in Louisville and has deep provider contracts across Kentucky, which often means broader in-network access locally. But Anthem's HMO-POS structure gives you out-of-network flexibility that pure HMOs don't. If you split your care between UK HealthCare and Baptist Health, a PPO or HMO-POS plan may be essential, since strict HMOs may only contract with one system.
